Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or did there exist a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining first five games, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to determine if they are improving or self-destructing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Return

A single player kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio during this campaign. He completed the last one on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were attempting to extend his stay for another season. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Finding His True Position

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to identify the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Labeled as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
