Lifetime of Salary Inadequate for UK Labor Force to Become Part of Most Affluent 10%, Analysis Finds

Per recent study, the typical earner in the UK would require over five decades of salary to attain the wealth level of the richest 10% of the population.

Growing Financial Divide Over Time

The analysis reviewed financial assets information including the recent health crisis years and found that back in the mid-2000s, it would have required 38 years of typical employment income to enter the top 10th of the financial hierarchy.

An economic expert associated with the study stated: "Economic disparities in Britain are currently so significant that a typical full-time employee accumulating their complete salary across their entire working life would remain unable to attain the highest level of the financial hierarchy."

Measuring the Economic Gap

The analysis revealed that the disparity between the assets of the median citizen and an individual in the richest segment was £1m in the pre-crisis period, but had expanded to £1.3 million in actual value by the pandemic years.

The researcher further stated: "These disparities are particularly worrying as wealth mobility in Britain is low – people that start life well-off tend to continue being rich, and vice versa."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Despite the financial disparity expanding in specific figures, the portion of total wealth in the UK held by the wealthiest families – known as "proportional economic disparity" – has been "largely unchanged since the eighties," per the analysis.

Throughout these years, complete net worth in the UK increased dramatically from triple the gross domestic product, to almost 7.5 times.

Factors of Financial Divide

Termed "passive" appreciation, by means of increasing property values and changes in retirement fund assessments, were the key contributors of the expanding economic divide from 2010 onward, according to the analysis.

These appreciations tended to accrue to senior citizens with real estate, the analysis reveals – worsening the generational financial disparity.

Age-Based Financial Divides

The average wealth gap between thirty-somethings and people aged 60-64 increased over twofold in real terms, from £135,000 in the mid-2000s, to 310 thousand pounds.

Regional Differences

Furthermore, the study revealed pronounced geographic differences, with the typical amount of wealth in 2020-22 amounting to 290 thousand pounds in the SE of England, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, as opposed to £110k in the northeastern region.

Pandemic Period Consequences

Amid the health crisis, when numerous employees were protected by the public-funded employment protection, and Covid shutdowns reduced expenditure possibilities, the data shows numerous families were capable of accumulating, enhancing their financial standing.

Higher-income households achieved superior outcomes, however. "The median home in the bottom income bracket saw their liquid savings rise by merely £80 throughout the health crisis (2019-20 to 2021-22), roughly identical to the 24 months before COVID. Conversely, the average household in the wealthiest fifth saw their liquid savings increase by £4,200," the report finds.
