The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
