Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the option to challenge certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
